Update - Creations,Concepts and Collage's

This update will show some art I have been working on this year. Unfortunately I have been extremely busy with university and have not had time to concentrate on my art as I would have liked.

Some of the uploads are old creations, while some are more recent. There is also an animated version in there to show the progress from concept to finale.

Concepts

I've been working on many projects at the moment but the most I am having fun with are the personal projects. Creating concept art is the one thing that doesn't feel like a chore to me and could sit all day doing it . Though after a while of doing it you forget the basics and lose the right way.

So this time I sat down with the task of creating a new character and remembered back what some of the basics were. What came to me was silhouettes. Its odd how a refresh like that brings some drawings to life. It also helps your mind think of new idea's and concepts.

One technique I have got my mind around is that when you can help it is don't "chicken scratch" or don't use messy lines on your sketches if you don't mean to. Confident single lines are the key, the more lines you have the more detail you put in and the brain tries to add everything up but if you have just small amounts of lines the more your brain has to assume and for some reason it looks better. I don't know how right that way is but its working for me at the moment.

Crazy blogg and its bad html layout >_<

Idea's

For my art book , I was originally going to work on one story, and that was the "space girl" one, which I personally think I have complicated too much but I seem to have gotten myself into working three different stories at a time. I come up with these idea's at the oddest times, luckly I keep a book with me to write/sketch these down as quick as possible.

Surprisingly all the stories are completely different, one is a story about a fish, one is about a girl who is hunting for a dragon and the last one is the space girl one which I cant really even explain. Though working on all these helps with my process. I have speed up my drawing the roughs and already have done more in one night with my new comic then i have in the months I've spent on my spacegirl one. The ability to not treat your work like gold and just settle with scribbles is actually a hard skill to learn.

It may take a while but I may be able to contribute at least 30 pages to my art book, which will help with filling it up if I don't get as many artists as I want to contribute.

Typography

Now while I've been done drawing and graphic design for a while, I've never realized how much work goes into the typography side of things. Working on the comic is challenging enough with the art but getting the wording, the font and positioning right is really hard. Luckily I have a lots of comics and art books to reference from and it makes you appreciate the hard work and effort that goes into them. Even as simple as the panels, most times its not just square boxes next to each other but rather all different shapes and sizes to make the page interesting. The speech bubbles themselves can express emotion that help the conversation become more exciting.

I've been working on a poster recently for an upcoming concert named breakOUT, organized by the ECU Guild. I started it a few weeks ago and sent in a few different designs to them so they had a selection to choose from so I knew what direction to go in. From there I tried to improve it as I went, sending a proof in every once in a while to point me back on track. Near the end of it though I wasn't liking it that much, It was looking messy and overcomplicated when I added the text it. A poster should be readable, in a way that you know the implied message that it sends, from at least 3 meters away. Unfortunately you couldn't do that with this one, so as much as I didn't want to I had to get rough and merciless with it. I hacked away at it, added a paper texture with a colour dodge(I think that's what it was) and through what may have been luck or skill made it look a lot better. I am quite pleased with it now.
